Textiles Shmextiles

My textile line is finally coming together and it's been a crazy past couple of weeks.  I've been meeting with various artists to go over the designs for screenprinting.  They're insanely talented and I feel so lucky to be able to work with them.  We're starting with 10 or so designs and will hopefully expand the line from there.  The designs are all over the map and the connecting thread is that they're all somehow personal to me.  (as fabrics tend to be.)

It's been an interesting process.  In my head, I know exactly what I want but I have to communicate that to the artists through my seriously rough sketches and various photos.  I can't imagine how awesome it would feel to be able to draw what's in your brain on paper.  I'm jealous. :)

Since fabric's on the brain, I've been drawn to it even more than usual.  I just found & bought this beautiful robe on etsy from Pretty Plumb Sugar whose things I loooooove:

I also picked up this antique thistle print (hint! hint! ;) from Bananastrudel:

...Like I've mentioned before, I have a little obsession with weeds & wildflowers so they will definitely be making appearances in the line.

The one design I actually drew myself is this overscale wild chicory blockprint-esque print:

It will be available in several colorways, one of them being a "true" colorway with the flowers in periwinkle blue.

I'll keep you posted on our progress but as of right now the line is set to come out this Spring around the same time as my furniture line.  Then of course I'll have to photograph the textiles in use so that'll take a little longer.  I'm definitely going to be lining my closet in one of them (They'll be sold as fabric or wallcoverings) and I can't wait to not mind when our closet door is open.

Nothing is set in stone right now so I'd love any thoughts and/or ideas you have to share.  Anything you're dying to see?

xoxo, Lauren

I just can't get OVER how exciting this whole process must be for you - a true and challenging design brainfest!
I love where you're going as far as organic patterns.

How hugely exciting for you! As an antique textile dealer I know the draw that fabrics has on you, I can't get enough. Your chicory drawing is wonderful and I can't wait to see it printed. I have fabrics from the 15 and 16th centuries with plant forms on them and they're amazing. If you ever want to see any let me know. Congratulations!

so exciting for you....we had a thistle on our wedding invitations-love them. and i have so many fond memories of walking down the lane with my grandma collecting queen anne's lace. we would put food coloring in the water and watch the white flowers turn different colors. one of my favorite flowers! can't wait to see the new lines!

I was thinking about buying that robe for my sister to wear before she changes into her gown on her wedding day but it is hard to tell what the material is like in the pictures. Is it see through? Or would she feel comfortable wearing it with people around? Is the material soft and silky or thick and cottony? Any help would be great. Thanks!

Lauren- Get excited? I'm excited! Wallpaper? I just cannot wait to see your beautiful designs in wallpaper. I have a feeling you will be making a lot of vertical surfaces very happy in 2011. My closet needs a makeover, too!

Have you thought of the chemicals applied to your fabrics? Chalk it up to me being a Mom, but my guard goes up when the tag on a fabric mentions the stain-resistant treatments. Do you know if the treatments are safe for children?

I would be interested to hear your thoughts on non-treated fabrics vs. treated fabrics. Or fabrics (like wool blends and polyesters) that seem to repel dirt naturally. (I think I heard most outdoor polyester fabrics have no treatments on them.)

Would you have Pure Style Home indoor/outdoor fabrics? (I'm looking for a bright-yellow-hinging-on-orange and white print. That would be heaven.)

I'm so interested to see what you come up with! Would love to see something with rich texture, but a simplistic print.

What an amazing experience to be able to design the furniture and fabric lines! I think you did a great job with the one that you drew, so I'm not sure why you don't think you're good at that? :-) If I had a print like that I would love to mix a fun geometric with it - will you have anything like that?

I am dyeing to see it all! I love your drawing, so simple yet gorgeous! Also, I have always had a fondness for thistle, so much so that I had to buy a duvet cover with a stylistic thistle all over it and I adore it! Can't wait for your online store...it's going to be fabulous I am sure!!! Hope you all are stayin' warm! xx Danielle

Wonderful, wonderful! So exciting. Good for you. (I would love to see a wallpaper that looks like a really worn out kilim rug. I think it would look beautiful in a room with stark white crown molding and rough, wide plank wooden floors...)
Good luck with all of this!
