Random Friday

Yesterday we had 4 of our scraggly pine trees removed.  When the guys were back there taking down the trees, they found this little cutie (above & below) with a hurt leg.  He wasn't afraid of us at all, and right before animal control arrived, I snapped some glamour shots.  (We were pretty sure he was rabid but he was just sooooo adorable!!!)  Raccoons are almost like little wolf-monkeys.  We gave him some pizza and I think he got to enjoy his last hour or so of life- munching away and hanging on my neighbor's step.  When the officer arrived, he confirmed he was rabid & could see that he was self-mutilating (that was the leg injury we had noticed.)  I had no idea rabid animals did that.  The officer said that this was Day 1 and that by Day 2 he would be more agressive & would continue to self-mutilate and that he had to shoot him.  (He attempted to catch him but couldn'tm so out came his .22)   It was pretty awful, but I'm just so thankful the tree guys found him before Christian or our pup did!

And for some more randomness, I've been playing with my lab beakers and my collection is growing:

I used some sprigs from that indestructible crazy bush that grows in the side of my house that I love so much.  And check out our 2 yr-old's scooter on the back patio in the corner of the pic below...  it's getting so warm!!!  wahoooooooooo

We've also been making good progress on the nursery.  (I say "good" because it feels like it's been forever since we started.  We usually bang projects out in a weekend but we're trying to focus more on life vs, blowing through projects.)   It's painted and things are up on the walls and we've gotten all but 1 fabric finished.  Our last step is hanging some curtains & shelving.  Cannot wait to show you!!!  here's Justin enjoying his owls:

So happy Friday & enjoy your weekend & get outside!!!  (How beautiful is this weather???!!!)  Come on Spring!!!
xoxo,
lauren

those lab beakers are wonderful but, alas, no match for that perfect Justin! Love the scooter touch and I have noticed in the past how a few of the photos of your home contain a toy here and there - a beautiful and real touch. you are such a favorite of mine.

I am sorry about the poor little guy. When Maddie was 6 weeks old and my husband was out of town I discovered a deer impaled and alive on our iron fence....a police officer shot it and I about lost it. I'll spare you the rest of the details but it does amaze me the wildlife just outside of DC! Have a great weekend!

Oh my gosh, I had no idea Animal Control carried real guns. I assumed they used tranquilizer guns.

Poor little raccoon, but I guess it was the best for him and for everyone in the area.

Oh no! So sad that the little critter was rabid. Sigh. So glad to hear that you gave him a little tasty last meal.

You know, Lauren, you're a great photographer! Love how fresh the colors are. Little J is just such a cutie!

And you know those beakers are a total hit! You've created a whole trend with your great styling!

RABIES!!! That is serious stuff. You were so smart to call animal control. If you feel like totally scaring yourself, google what happens to people who get exposed to rabies....

Love those beakers! Can't wait to see how the nursery turns out.

We have the most wonderful hospital founded by a wonderful family who lost a child to rabies. They made it a mission to build a family friendly children's hospital which is awesome. I know this because,
my son was there for 9 days due to an emergency surgery, spare you all the details, but you were wise to call animal control. Rule of thumb is you should never see raccoons during the day, or you know there is a problem.
Now as for those beakers, they are clearly you, so pure and simple in the midst of raising little ones, pretty things and projects give us hope and clarity.

OH my goodness! That reminds me that my dog and cat are due for their vaccines. Especially after reading this and having seen a raccoon hanging out on our front porch a few weeks ago! Eekk!!

Hope your darling family can get out and enjoy the nice weather rabid-raccoon free this weekend!

Poor little guy!Our lab/shepherd mix was in our "back 40" late one night and we heard a lot of racket. He had killed a very large raccoon. Animal control came the next day and carried it out, hanging between 2 poles! They tested it and it wasn't rabid, but that's unusual.

Love your beakers---so pretty! And, your children are precious.

Sad that the friend you made didn't have a happy ending. On the bright side love the beaker idea and your little man is a doll. :)

I love that owl mobile! One of my friends is pregnant and I know she'd love it too. Have you said where it's from?

Oh sad scary on the racoon. Yikers!

Beakers and little trike certainly signal spring...as do happy babies!

poor guy. rabies is actually rare these days. esp. so close to home. at least he had some pizza.

rabies makes you coo coo. hence self mutilation.

I feel really bad for that poor animal! Thank goodness that you are all safe.

Your baby is already growing so fast and changing! So cute. You can't keep us in suspense {really} from seeing the nursery. Just give us a peek...something!

Hope you are well~

Sorry you had to experience that particular "circle of life", but like you, I'm grateful that the problem is taken care of. Love the beakers...such a versatile accessory. Can't wait to see the nursery. My daughter and I have worked on her nursery...I'm in Texas and she's in Delaware...so I haven't seen the finished product of that either. Yall are both great at keeping me in suspense!

I love the wild things that live in our backyards like the deer. I would of been a bit frightened though. You are brave. Enjoy the weather this weekend, I have a big sale to go to at The Vintage Source, www.thevintagesource.net you should check it out online.

Nocturnal animals out in broad daylight are always bad news. We've encountered opossums and coyotes but no raccoons.
I'm so glad there was a cute baby at the end of that sad story! Have a happy spring weekend with all your boys!

Sorry about Mr Raccoon, I am glad you kept your distance. Love the beakers the more the better, I say!! OK now let's talk about CUTE just look how much he has grown what a little doll-baby. I can tell he loves his owls. Can not wait to see your finished project. I think you have done very well. I am taking forever on the play room re-do, I just found the sheets for the girls bed and a new pillow for the boys bed so not onto the painting. Have a wonderful weekend,Kathysue

How cute is that baby boy of yours! Adorable. The beakers are so intersting.

Poor little raccoon. It is a good thing your tree guys found him. Quite dangerous to have around your dog and children I would think. Have a great weekend.

Hi there Lauren,
I might be the only person to think this way, but don't you think you need to hose down the back steps and maybe throw a little disinfectant down too?
I know nothing about rabies, but just to be sure.

Have a nice weekend.

Poor little guy! We don't have rabies here in Australia thank goodness, and I had no idea it made animals mutilate themselves. Sounds awful. At least he was put out of his misery.
Have a lovely weekend,

You are just so precious, what can I say? Got bad cancer news this week. Did a CT Scan of the brain today. If it has spread to the brain then I have about 6 mos. If it is just growing but has not left the lung then I will have to embrace being bald, the 8 hr. killer chemo and Nulesta shot that makes you want to die. Brooke, my 17 yr. old grandaughter/care giver is devistated and needs your prayers badly because she lost her dad at such an early age and now me, she is no longer a believer and I just can't deal with that. So Lauren please pray for Brooke.
xoxo to you and your's,

Awww... poor little raccoon. Of course, if he had become aggressive and dangerous that would not be good at all.

Little Justin is so cute!! Can't wait to see the finished nursery.

Have a great weekend!

Justin is so cute! Speaking of racoons - my neighbor woke up to find a racoon in her bedroom Wed night! Someone forgot to lock the doggie door. Luckily the racoon decided to walk out on his own accord.

Poor little animal. My house is like a wildlife preserve...with the trials and tribulations of wildlife. Last year a car hit a fox baby and I waited for the police to come because his tail was broken but he was fine other than that. (Desperately called wildlife animal rescue but they take two days to get back to you!)But when they came they just shot it. Said foxes are rabid animals. Know you witnessed an awful scene. So glad you gave him pizza!

Aww, poor little fella. That's so sad! Nature can be pretty brutal - self mutilating?!? Yikes.

Can't wait to see your magic in the nursery. I bought a set of beaker vases last year and cannot find them to save my life - it's driving me mad because I want them back out on my table for fresh snipped blooms! Ugh, the life of having a packed storage unit (or two).

That is so sad about the squirrel, but glad that you got to visit with him before he had to "go". Also that is nice you gave him pizza. I love animals - poor little things are so helpless. But most importantly he did not contact you or the wee ones. Sweet little fellow though. Oh dear!

so glad animal control took care of the poor little guy. i had no idea until last year (when my baby was exposed to rabies) that there is NO CURE if a human actually develops it. it was terrible, waiting and praying that my daughter did not develop it. very, very scary, because there are no initial symptoms in humans, and once there are symptoms, it is too late. please be SOOOO careful! like I said, there is no cure!
