Cheap "Vintage" Fans!

I love fans. Especially at night when I sleep. But I also love a chandelier in my bedroom and don't want to sacrifice it for a ceiling fan.

SO, I've been dying for a vintage floor fan or vintage look-alike fan. (check out Haskell Harris's bedroom below. You can see her whole house here.)

When we were visiting my dad (we're home!) I went to my FAVORITE antique mall, Volo, and saw so many beautiful vintage fans (below found at retro.net)

However, I really didn't like the visual I got when I pictured Christian's arm in the fan. (The slats are so far away!!!) I've also been wanting Restorations Hardware's Allaire Telesoping fans (below) but was having trouble justifying forking over $200+ for a floor fan when the ugly ones are so cheap. So, you know me... I went almost a whole summer without a fan because I wasn't willing to spend the dough or buy an ugly one. haha

Ahhhh, so pretty!!!

Anyway... Enter Walmart. Oh wow. We never go because we don't have one near us at home. But we love that place. My eagle-eye husband saw fan boxes labeled "vintage" and we snapped them up right away!! At only $38 and $25 (?I forget exactly?) I couldn't have been happier!!! Below is the desk on and it's almost identical to RH's desk fan.

(hahah like my vintage map styling? ;) ;)

And here's a closeup of the floor fan in my bedroom. (The top pic in this post is also of my walmart fan):

a bit more of a gunmetal finish in some places (why there would be more than one finish, I have no idea) but for $38, I'm ok with it... Actually I should say THRILLED with it! :)

(I'm almost ready to show you some after pics of the bedroom- just waiting on a couple of items to arrive!) We found some more amazing deals this past week & can't wait to show you!!!

xoxo,

lauren

what a pretty fan- the vintage look is much prettier than some of the ugly white plastic fans out that are out there :)

I am generally a huge fan of your posts. You have some great ideas. I love to see what you have cooking. I cringed today when I read your post. I would pay $200 just to not have something purchased from Wal-mart in my home. I don't think that I could stand looking at something that I knew came from that place. As a small business owner, I can not imagine supporting a business that seeks to undermines the small businesses the surrounding areas, exploits its employees and overall does not facilitate economic growth in the communities in which it has stores. Be glad you don't have one near you...

J Fudo, I'm sorry you feel that way. Being on a serious budget, if a company can help me/ my family afford what we want/ need, then I'm going to shop there. I do understand supporting small businesses/ local companies, but not when it isn't affordable for us... I've been hot all summer & hope you can understand!

(all this meant with utmost respect- thanks for your input!!)

Good thinking about the danger of the real vintage fans. Ouch. I like what you purchased. Think I've seen something similar at Target.

Not only do I appreciate this post but my husband would too. The fan is always a battle since I took down all the ceiling fans in the house. I love this one. Looks so much better than what we currently have!!!! Walmart, who knew?

Great fans!

I must be the only person left alive that likes ceiling fans! Well...we need 'em 365 here...so I like a good old fashiuned dark wood fan whirling above. Call me weird.

Great find, Lauren! It's always an unexpected surprise to find something at WM that I'd actually have in my home, and I was thinking about cruising over there today for dog food and tp but didn't have the time. I'll MAKE time tomorrow!

yeah, Walmart is horrible. they make their vendors sell them goods so cheaply half go broke trying to service them. ughh. but I go too, heheh.

ok = I have the RH fan! this one is jsut as cute. my husband couldn't put the rh one together and had to return it and get the floor model. can't wait to see your bedroom!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Oh, Lauren, I'm with you! I love to support the small businesses, especially locally, but when they are charging an arm and a leg for a similar item we can get at a more reasonable price, it's a no-brainer! I know especially for myself, I tire of things so easily, it would be ludicrous for me to spend hundreds and hundreds when I can spend far less. Eating is a little more important to me than decorating!

All the best,
Eileen

I've had this Walmart fan for a couple of years now and I LOVE it. We have it on every night...as well as our dark brown ceiling fan. That's Texas for you!

I can't say that I don't love the fan... because it IS beautiful. It is the thought of where it came from that I don't think I could stomach. I look forward to seeing your house take shape. It is such a treat!
