Fern Window Boxes

This past weekend we added window boxes on a whim.  I've always wanted them and they were on sale at the garden center so we went for it.  I loooove quick projects and this one was simple.  (Especially for me watching while Dave was up on the ladder ;) ;)

So far, I've been caring for them through the windows and I went with ferns because they do so well with the moisture from that air.  I'm completely blanking out on the other plant I chose but I loved it's almost flourescent color & white blooms.

The plants are so pretty from the inside too.  You can see them from the window and it feels like they're in the room with you.  We recently switched the boys' rooms so now they're sharing a bedroom and the second bedroom is a playroom.  (Over the summer when we stayed with my dad they got used to sharing a bedroom and wanted to keep it that way when we got home.   I love seeing them so excited to be together.)  Christian's "job" is watering the plants because he knows mommy runs a plant hospice.

Over the next few months we taking down a closet in the boys room to make room for a big boy bed for Justin.  I'm planning on doing duvet covers out of one of my fabrics, "Filigree Chevron" and I can't wait to see how they turn out!

We're going to my friend & photogapher Helen Norman's farm this weekend to shoot my new line of fabrics.  The crazy amount of rain we've had has but a bit of a {literal} damper on our original plans which included lots of field shots, but Helen's property has so many beautiful spots I'm not worried.  My  first textile collection is completed and I have 14 different designs with multiple colorways in each pattern for a total of about 60 different fabrics.  I plan on adding a few new designs seasonally.  I've pulled a ton of inspiration images and can't wait!!  love the idea of stacking the fabrics inside a piece of furniture like this one:

Enjoy your day!!

  1. Lauren--those window boxes are a lovely exterior detail. Love the shot of your boys too--they are adorable! Can't wait to see your full line of fabric--I've been excited for a while to get the "complete" picture. You do amazing work!

  2. Lauren - you need to get a product like this for your window boxes! http://www.moistearth.com/ Mix them into the soil and you will not believe the difference in how often you have to water them. You can get a similar product at Home Depot - just ask in the garden department. Its about $13 for a bag, but it will last you forever! My mom told me about them last summer and FINALLY I have container gardens that survive!

  12. It looks like those chartreuse plants are Corabells "Key Lime Pie". Love the lime green with the gray & orange! Here are some other great plants that would look great in your flower boxes:

And, BTW, my favorite pic is of your son with the light saber (I think?) in his shirt! As the mother of 2 boys, 15 & 17, it cracked me up! I love that you show real life on your blog!!!

  15. Awww! Love that they are sharing a room. Can't wait to have another Little Frien of my own so that he/she can share a room with our eldest. Its sweet when siblings grow up so close...as so much gets lost in the McMansions of today. Like, how to share. How to negotiate truces. How to live with and LOVE another human being. (The window boxes are cute too! We have a drought in Texas, so no new plants for us...)

  18. I love the fern window boxes. (did a post on them recently).....my favorite fern is "Autumn Fern"...it is not deciduous...the new growth is copper (fab color next to your house) that turns a pleasant green...they get huge...so not really appropriate for your window boxes, but would look great in your foundation plantings to tie in the "boxes" and have a bit of green in the winter while the other shrubs are dormant. Have a great weekend...k

  23. Love the idea of ferns in window boxes... perfect timing since I just purchased a dozen or so 'Autumn Ferns' from my local Wal-Mart on clearance. I'm not sure how well they would do staying in the window boxes over the winter here in good ole' Missouri. I might would have to over-winter them in our garage. Just had a brainy idea - could buy extra liners (on clearance also) and switch out liners leaving the ferns planted and intact... that way could decorate the boxes for winter and then pop the ferns back in their place next spring :)

  25. so wonderful about your fabrics!!!

I LOVE window boxes. So afraid I will kill the plants. My challenge would be watering them since I can't get to them from the inside {our 180 yr. old house has interior storm windows on the inside so we didn't have to get rid of the old wavy glass windows}... but the front of our house is just begging for them. Don't you think??

this post made me smile; I have 2 boys and one is Christian.

    hugs!
