I'm crazy about this oil painting painting I recently found for our kitchen nook. It's by a German artist named Decker and was done in 1886. You know when something just calls to you? ("Buy me!!" ;) I didn't know where I'd put it (I rarely do with art... If I love it, I know I'll find a spot) but for $60, I was thrilled. It's full of my colors and I just love its moodiness.
I've been meaning to get something up on the left side of my kitchen nook for a while now... Here's a photo of the right side with the chalkboard:

The green in my cabinets (Behr's Witch Hazel in Semigloss) works perfectly with the Decker painting:

I'm leaving it unframed and I love seeing the tattered sides of the canvas. The painting is so beautifully aged.

I'm never one for permanence in my home, but it'll be staying in the nook for a good long time! While I do appreciate museum-quality art (who doesn't?) I'm always on the lookout for beautiful inexpensive original paintings. (And by inexpensive I mean under a $100 and preferably in the $30 - $50 range... I know that's cheap, but I feel no guilt at checkout! ;)

It's an absoutely gorgeous painting! It looks great in your nook - sometimes things are meant to be...I just bought an etching and I love it. I couldn't leave the store without it! Enjoy!

Love your new acquisition! I have a still life I picked up over 10 years ago for about $30 and I get lots of comments on how cool it is with no frame.

ReplyDeleteA home with art is always full of stories and personality. I can imagine telling stories to your sons while you eat there about some storm or some sailor and his ship. We always like to tell stories while we eat. Art can inspire stories and conversation.

It is beautiful Lauren! Great find. I am always on the look out for old "cheap" paintings. I hate to "bum" you out about this {and maybe it doesn't matter because it was inexpensive} but be careful of the sun shining on it...it will fade.

Lauren I love your thought process on paintings - I like you always look for something under $100.00 not because I'm cheap but because part of the thrill is finding something perfect on a budget. It fits your nook perfect and I love the pricetag and the tattered sides. One day I'm going to do a post on the all the art I bought under $100.00 - you'd be surprised what you can find. I love your design aesthetic.

I am loving the wall paper you chose for your kitchen. I painted my kitchen cabinets a very similar color, don't you love it? The oil painting has so much character. I keep on saying this, but you have such amazing, fantastic taste.

ReplyDeleteI always love your ideas and have a paint color question. Do you match the paint color of your kitchen cabinets to the doors and other woodwork? I just painted my cabinets cream and am afraid my kitchen will look yellow (yuck!) if the doors and woodwork match. Maybe I am wrong though, I certainly don't want patchwork. My walls are a light latte color. Do you have any tips on this? I'm lost! Thank you, Thank you!
